According to some authors, GUEY or HUIOU is the sun in the Arawakan language of the island’s native Taíno people.  The name Higüey is believe to mean Land Where the Sun is Born.

Just a few minutes’ drive from Bavaro-Punta Cana, leave the shiny world of all-inclusive hotels  behind as we drive you thru villages & small communities towards Higuey City.

On our way to Higuey we will stop at a family owned business where getting only the freshest ingredients directly from local farmers allows the owner to handcraft the most delicious fresh cheese around here & makes his family owned food-store a really popular stop among the locals every morning. You will be able to sample some of their cheese, milk products or homemade sweets besides a fresh Mabi which is a local delicacy.

Once at the city, stroll with your personal guide over the local market of Higuey, where loud shouting merchants and local vendors price their goods, tropical fruit, organic vegetables, and fresh meat and much more.

By taking any of the narrow aisles you will find funny cooking utensils, herbs, natural medicine shops & many other typical curiosities.

The experience won’t be complete without a visit to the most important monuments in  Higuey, the Church of San Dionisio from the 16th century were the locals say the Lady of Mercy was once seen & of course the famous Basilica of La Altagracia which Pope Paul II personally blessed back in 1992.

The perfect end for your “being a local” experience, enjoy Dominican  dishes  with the locals at a typical restaurant before  leaving Higuey City behind and heading back to your hotel.
